While a federal response to the opioid crisis that has gripped the U.S. for years now is still in the works, the need doesn’t seem to be dissipating. According to a Jan. 25, 2018 article from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper of Sarasota, Florida, a little more than 1,900 infants born at Florida hospitals “suffered from neonatal abstinence syndrome in 2014.” This, according to the article, is due to being born by mothers addicted to various opioids. The cause for concern here is that in 2015 and 2016, the number of Florida newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome climbed to 2,487 and 4,215 respectively. While the best drug rehab centers strive to help those in the throes of addiction, infants pose an entirely different problem. According to the U.S Library of Medicine, extreme cases of treatment for these infants could include methadone and morphine when treating withdrawal-like symptoms that include seizures, sweating, vomiting and fever. “It certainly is a concern for our state as it is nationally,” the executive director of Drug Free Manatee told the newspaper regarding these neonatal cases.
All across Florida, those making the brave choice to fight their addictions with the help of drug treatment programs are in good company. This is because Florida’s record-high of opioid-related deaths rose to 5,725 people in 2016. What’s more, the Herald-Tribune article notes that this is “an increase of 1,483 or 35 percent compared with 2015.” For those suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, the decision to seek out the best drug rehab centers in their area is an essential one if survival and recovery is the goal. This is because drug treatment programs offered by recovery centers with well-planned offerings address every aspect of addiction imaginable. This includes different approaches for men and women as well as family education programs that encourage involvement from parents or guardians as the addict makes their way through in-patient services.
When researching the best drug rehab centers to see if the offerings could help ease the pain of addiction, it is suggested to truly learn about each institution’s approach. A typical admission to drug treatment programs will include a slew of emotions that make the process all the more heart-wrenching for families to watch. Patients themselves will have the opportunity to be placed in individualized intensive recovery programs or even hospitalization to address medication management, discharge and long-term recovery. While the road to recovery can be long and daunting for some, the prospect of becoming a statistic should be enough to encourage individuals to make the right decision.
