Cuban Cuisine is some of the finest in the world. That’s why it’s typically not hard to find a Cuban Restaurant regardless of what city you’re in. Whether you’re dining at restaurants in Asheville, NC, Miami, Fla., or Long Island, NY, there’s sure to be a Cuban Restaurant nearby.
But if you find yourself at one of these restaurants for the first time, you might have some questions on what you should order. To help answer that for you, here are some signature Cuban-inspired dishes that you’ll likely find and enjoy at any Cuban Restaurant.
Medianoche: This Cuban-style sandwich will leave you feeling like you’re in Havana. With roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles, it’s almost identical to a traditional Cuban sandwich, but the bread used for the Medianoche is sweet egg-based and similar to that of challah bread.
Ropa Vieja: This is the Cuban version of shredded beef. Typically the beef is accented with olives and capers. Peppers are also common to find in this dish.
Pernil Asado Con Mojo: This Cuban favorite translates into Mojo-marinated roasted pork shoulder. The pork shoulder is typically soaked overnight in a citrusy mojo marinade to give it its savory flavor.
Fricase De Pollo: This recipe for this Cuban-style chicken stew has been passed down through generations of Cuban islanders who made the hearty dish regularly. Most of its flavor comes from a blend of pimento-stuffed olives and capers. Sweetness is added from raisins.
Cubano: The name for a Cuban ham and cheese sandwich. This sandwich is usually grilled on a white roll with Swiss cheese, boiled ham, sliced pickles, and roasted pork.
Pescao En Escabeche: This soup-like dish features fish with Escabeche sauce. It is simply seasoned with garlic, sliced yellow onion, bell peppers, and some bay leaf.
